Treating Olympic medalists' sore muscles

Yanic Szöghy could not have hoped for a better party present. A few days after his 50th birthday, the Julievillois flew to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro as a massage therapist for the Canadian swimming team.

Providence has certainly sided with Yanic Szöghy who was able to experience in Rio an atmosphere and a frenzy unequaled for moons. At press time, Canadian swimmers had won five medals. The last time representatives of the maple leaf had won so many swimming podiums was at the 1984 Games. Moreover, before those Games, Marianne Limpert was the last Canadian swimmer to win a medal, a feat achieved in 1996.

“It is one of the most beautiful experiences of my life. The atmosphere is wonderful. We almost had a heart attack the other day when we thought Santo Condorelli would win his race,” said Yanic Szöghy in an interview conducted on Skype. We attract everyone's curiosity. People from other sports came to watch the swimmers in the pool.”

Despite all the excitement, Mr. Szöghy does not lose sight of his primary mission; provide valuable support to the athlete. “There are five of us, two physios and three massage therapists, I am the  rookie of the group. Everyone brings something different. It is the athlete who is important and we try to remain unobtrusive, ”adds the man who owns the Center Kinésis de Saint-Lambert.

Yanic Szöghy and other therapists assigned to the swimming team must do their job at Canada House in the Olympic Village. He is busy during the day, but free in the evening to be able to attend the competitions at the swimming pool. By the way, he can see some celebrities.
“I was next to Usain Bolt, but I didn't have a camera. Now I drag her everywhere. Also, the other night, I was sitting in the stands next to swimmer Penny Oleksiak's brother, Jamie, who is a defenseman for the Dallas Stars. I took a photo this time.

Great involvement in sport
Born in Montreal to a Hungarian father who immigrated to the country in the 1950s, Yanic Szöghy was himself a keen swimmer. He participated in Canadian Olympic trials, but he had placed above the 20th place. He was also a water polo coach for the Quebec and Canadian teams. Subsequently, he was able to attend major international competitions, including the FINA World Championships as well as the Pan American Games in Toronto in 2015 as a massage therapist.

“Since I was at the Pan Ams, I had a good idea that I might be called up to go to the Games. I was happy when I found out I could go. On the other hand, I told myself that it was bad news for my spouse who would not have a vacation. She told me to go there”, mentions Yanic Szöghy whose mandate in Rio ends on August 13.

Mr. Szöghy would be ready to relive this adventure in four years in Tokyo. “However, I might manage to plan a vacation afterwards with my spouse.”
