Acupuncture to relieve back pain

New guidelines were issued by the American College of Physicians (ACP), in 2017, regarding the treatment of non-radicular lower back pain. They encourage clinicians to recommend non-pharmaceutical approaches, including acupuncture, to their patients as a treatment option for this type of pain, whether acute or chronic. This is a big change since the previous recommendations, which date from 2007, favor the prescription of drugs (eg acetaminophen, anti-inflammatories, opioids, etc.). Indeed, acupuncture is known to relieve pain, whether it is related to a trauma, a sports injury, a repetitive movement, or other. It does this by reducing inflammation, activating tissue healing, relaxing muscle spasms and promoting better blood circulation. In addition, it helps reduce the anxiety that often accompanies pain, in addition to promoting better sleep.
